December is here, which means you may have a busy month of socializing ahead of you: work parties, family gatherings, traveling and seeing old friends. But when your teeth are dark, dingy, and stained, it can be tough to get out there and let loose. You may be self-conscious about your smile and put more energy into hiding it than enjoying yourself. And where’s the fun in that?
If you are embarrassed about your discolored smile, consider giving yourself an early holiday gift this year: professional teeth whitening from Natural Smiles. We offer two fast and highly effective teeth whitening treatments: Zoom and KoR. Whichever you choose, you will have a dazzling white smile that makes you look years younger, more vibrant, and that you will be eager to show off.

You Don’t Have to Live with Discolored Teeth
When your pearly whites are not so pearly or white, you may look ragged, worn down, and older than your years. You may think that staining and discoloration is just part part of getting older, but it may actually be due to what you eat and drink. Extrinsic refers to staining of the outer layer of the teeth, or the enamel. The following are common culprits in extrinsic staining:
- Cigarettes and chewing tobacco
- Coffee and tea
- Soda and sports drinks
- Wine (including white wine)
- Dark-colored berries
- Tomato-based sauces
If you do consume these things you can minimize the damage by brushing your teeth right after (or at least drinking a glass of water).
Poor oral hygiene, or eating a lot of acidic foods, makes your tooth enamel less smooth. This enables stains to stick better and makes them more difficult to remove.
Intrinsic stains are rooted deeper in the tooth, below the enamel. They may be caused by certain medications, overexposure to fluoride as a child, decay, or injury to the tooth. Intrinsic stains generally will not respond to chemical teeth whitening treatments. At Natural Smiles of Louisville, we will give you a thorough examination and if we determine your stains are intrinsic, we will be happy to discuss how you can still get the gleaming white smile you want.
The Problem with Drugstore Products
You’ve probably seen the wide variety of over-the-counter teeth whiteners at your local drugstore. Maybe you’ve even tried one (or a few) of them. From toothpastes to gels, there is no shortage of products promising to give you a stunning white smile. Problem is, most of them just don’t work very well.
For one thing, over-the-counter products contain a much lower concentration of active whitening ingredient than our Zoom and KoR professional-strength systems. And the mouth trays that hold the gel against your teeth are not custom made, so chances are they will not fit properly. This means the gel isn’t reaching everywhere it should, and it may be spilling over into areas where it shouldn’t — exposing you to unnecessary sensitivity and irritation. Ouch!
We Offer Two Convenient Whitening Systems
At Natural Smiles, we offer our patients two convenient whitening options. Both are highly effective, both are completely safe and monitored by Dr. Gill, and both deliver the results you want. Dr. Gill will help you choose the product that is best for you.
Our Zoom in-office treatment offers practically instant results. Your teeth will become up to eight shades whiter in just 45 minutes. Our chairside treatment uses a powerful bleaching gel that’s activated by a special LED light. Most patients report little or no sensitivity and, of course, our doctors and staff will be around to ensure you are comfortable through the procedure.
The KoR teeth whitening system promises to make your teeth up to sixteen shades whiter. The gels are rigorously monitored to ensure they remain refrigerated from the time they leave the manufacturer to the moment they arrive at our dental offices. This keeps them fresh and at their maximum potency. KoR contains special desensitizing ingredients that don’t just treat sensitivity; they actually prevent the discomfort from occurring in the first place. KoR gels are chemically activated — no hot lights required. KoR custom-made whitening trays are specially designed to seal the gel against your teeth and keep saliva out. Saliva can dilute the gel and dramatically reduce effectiveness.
